TC 257 – Museum Studies
Each fall, the University Museums partners with the Textile and Clothing Museum to teach an introductory course on museums, objects, and collections. The course covers an overview of museums in contemporary American society, museum history, functions of museums, philosophy and ethics behind museums, collections and curatorial practices, funding and governance issues, education, and object research and exhibition development. In past semesters, the class has participated in a behind-the-scenes tour of the State Historical Museum in Des Moines with State Curator Jerome Thompson and an in-depth look at the Des Moines Art Center with educator Jennifer Cooley. At the end of the semester, students research an assigned museum collection object and plan an exhibition.
Hon 322Q – Public Art: Eyesore or Treasure?
Each spring, University Museums staff teach an Honors Seminar on Public Art. The students focus on learning the roles and functions of public art, from historic to contemporary points of view. The goal of the seminar is to increase the students’ appreciation, understanding, and awareness of the uses and meanings of public art in general, and specifically, of the Art on Campus Collection at Iowa State University
Iowa State students are invited to use the University Museums gallery space for group and club meetings. Depending on the current exhibition, the Brunnier Art Museum and Christian Petersen Art Museum can accommodate up to 100 students, and The Farm House Museum can accommodate up to 25 students. Chairs can also be requested for use during these meetings. Two weeks notice is preferred to schedule space in the museums. For more information or to reserve museum space, please contact Dorothy Witter at 515-294-4442 or dwitter@iastate.edu
