PRESS RELEASE: Iowa artist Rose Frantzen to speak at Iowa State University March 4

AMES, IOWA - February 18, 2021 Fine art lectures are not an everyday occurrence at the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business, but an upcoming public art installation in the Gerdin Business Building will have everyone talking, including the artist herself.

Iowa artist Rose Frantzen will talk about her recent studio and public works of art beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, in the Kingland Hub, 1450 Gerdin Business Building on the Iowa State University campus. The event will offer an opportunity to hear about Frantzen’s artistic philosophy and process and to view updates on her new mural, which will be installed later in the year in the Lynn A. and Diane Engh Anderson Family Gallery in the recently opened expansion to the Gerdin Business Building.

This in-person event will have limited audience capacity and requires pre-registration. Click here to register.

A native of Maquoketa, Iowa, Frantzen has gained national and international acclaim for her oil paintings from life that bring contemporary perspectives to a traditional “alla prima” approach. In addition to landscapes, still lifes, and figurative works, Frantzen creates serial and allegorical works, incorporating abstract or surreal settings.

A new exhibition, Perceptions of Identity: Paintings by Rose Frantzen, is on view through July 30 at the Christian Petersen Art Museum in Morrill Hall. The museum is open 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, throughout the semester. Admission is free, with a recommended donation of $8.

The exhibition is organized by University Museums and coordinated by Sydney Marshall, assistant curator, with works of art selected from the artist's collection and the University Museums’ Permanent Collection. Major support for the exhibition is provided by the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business. Additional support is generously provided by Avis Lovell Andre, Vickie and Norman Hill, Robert and Nancy Lindemeyer, and Cynthia and John Paschen, MD.

“This exhibition is a great opportunity to view a large selection of Frantzen’s paintings, particularly her studio work exploring how society influences the perception of others and their identity,” said Marshall. “Having Rose on campus to speak in depth about her In the Face of Illusion series will provide attendees with a broader understanding of Frantzen as an artist.”

On March 3rd, 5th and 6th, art lovers can enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at Frantzen’s process as she paints new portraits for her public art installation, Faces of Iowa State. Thanks to a livestream video hosted by University Museums, viewers will be able to watch over Frantzen’s shoulder as she paints Iowa State students.

The six students selected were nominated by their college and selected by President Wendy Wintersteen.
