In the Woods delves deeply into human’s complex relationship with trees, presented through the evocative works of artist Jeanine Coupe Ryding, whose artistic practice incorporates a focus on wood as both a material and a metaphor. In her latest body of work, Coupe Ryding presents a series of monumental and intimate woodcut prints distilling her experiences, thoughts, and relationships with trees into a compelling artistic narrative. Through her prints and artist’s books, she reflects on the multitude of eco-systemic relationships that trees embody, highlighting their role as essential resources and symbols of cultural and spiritual value. As we navigate an increasingly complex environmental landscape, this exhibition calls us to recognize trees not merely as resources. It challenges us to reflect on our role in preserving the natural world and to consider the histories and stories that trees hold within their rings.

ROOTED IMPRESSIONS
EARLY WORKS by Jeanine Coupe Ryding

Jeanine Coupe Ryding (American, b. 1948) is a distinguished artist whose works of art are prominently featured in Iowa State University Museums’ and the Memorial Union’s permanent collections. With roots in Iowa and a career spanning national and international stages, Coupe Ryding has built a legacy of innovative printmaking that intertwines storytelling, social commentary, and personal introspection.

Since the 1970s, Coupe Ryding’s expressive woodcut prints have evolved from representational forms to deeper abstraction while maintaining an underlying narrative quality. Her current exhibitions, Rooted Impressions and In the Woods, highlight this progression, exploring themes of degeneration, renewal, and the life cycles of natural and historical worlds. Further, these works of art represent a contemporary voice within the long-standing narrative tradition of printmaking. Through expressive woodcut prints, Coupe Ryding continues to explore the interplay between abstraction and narrative, presenting art that is both thought-provoking and evocative.

These exhibitions are curated and organized by University Museums. Support was given by the Howell Fund for Education, Renate Dellman, and University Museums Membership. Loans provided by the artist and the Memorial Union Art Collection.
