Faces of Iowa State
Published in conjunction with the 2017 exhibition, Faces of Iowa State, this publication celebrates the tradition and impact of portraiture at Iowa State University by illuminating contemporary people who are change agents and contributors to Iowa State. Faces of Iowa State illustrates stories of a democratic education where the visions, dreams and actions of individuals play a vital role in the shaping of Iowa State’s collective identity and culture.
The initial 21 portraits were painted during the 2016 Iowa State Fair, by artist Rose Frantzen. During her 10-day residency over 500,000 Fair attendees witnessed the process. After the overwhelmingly positive response the portraits received, Frantzen was invited by ISU to establish a portrait studio in the Christian Petersen Art Museum during April and October of 2017, where she was commissioned to paint additional portraits of impactful Iowa Staters.
This 52 page soft cover publication includes biographies and color images of each of the 39 portrait sitters as well as images and information on the historical portraits in the University Museums collection. By celebrating these people, this publication focuses on the diverse qualities that define the people of a great university.
