In 1934, then Iowa State President Raymond M. Hughes commissioned Grant Wood, head of the Iowa Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) to design the mural cycle When Tillage Begins, Other Arts will Follow, the first of its kind in Iowa. Wood completed a second mural cycle Breaking the Prairie Sod a few years later. Take a closer look at these significant works of art located in ISU's Parks Library and learn more about their history and production.
