It's an exciting time for University Museums at Iowa State as the transformation of the Brunnier Art Museum, storage vault and staff office begins. The finished space will showcase world-class exhibitions, enhance visitor experience and secure the permanent collection for decades to come. Led by architecture firm DLR Group, in conjunction with Facilities Planning and Management at ISU, the front of house and behind the scenes changes will be significant including:
Brunnier Art Museum Entrance
A highlight of the Museum renovation project will be a new entry facade within the 2nd floor of the Scheman Building composed of a 26 foot long, floor to ceiling, glass wall.
Expanded Exhibition Space
Through an increase of 1,800 square feet of exhibition space in the new Lori A. Jacobson Gallery, the entrance remodel will allow University Museums to showcase additional collection objects.
Newly Designed Collections Vault
The main permanent collection storage area will be transformed to add high density storage solutions adding more linear square feet of storage space. The new storage vault transformation, supported by Arthur Hilsinger and Barbara Jansen, enables University Museums to better access, protect and conserve the significant fine and decorative art collections.
Redesigned Offices for Museum Staff
With the need for a second emergency egress from the Brunnier Art Museum, a strategic remodel of the office space will streamline operations and maximize space.
With an increase in collection management capacity and the additional entrance gallery, University Museums anticipates the ability to attract highly competitive exhibitions, thus furthering the museums' ability to fulfill Iowa State University's land-grant mission of providing access to intellectual and expressive content not only to students, faculty and staff but for an ever-increasing population outside our campus.
It is anticipated that the Museum will reopen to the public in mid-September 2019, marking the 44th anniversary year of the opening of the Brunnier Art Museum.
