University Museums was recently awarded an Art Project Grant by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, to support the upcoming exhibition, Artists in Iowa: The First Century, at the Brunnier Art Museum.

The Art Project grant aims to "support the creation and presentation of new artwork, development of an arts experience or formation of an arts education" that add to the vitality of the arts in Iowa and provide arts opportunities for all Iowans.

Artists in Iowa: The First Century will highlight the art created in Iowa from the mid-19th century to 1950 and includes works of art from more than 40 artists including John Bloom, Wacochachi, Charles A. Cumming, Louise Orwig, and of course, Grant Wood, along with other artists who have often been overlooked and gone unknown. The exhibition will be unveiled on September 19 at the Beyond the Glass Reopening Gala and will be open to the public from September 20 through December 20, 2019.

The grant funds will be used to finance the research and writing by guest curator Dr. Lea Rosson DeLong. Funds will also be used towards the printing of a publication, authored by DeLong, which will be one of the first since the 1939 publishing of Iowa Artists of the First Hundred Years. In addition, the grant will help support an upcoming seminar on the same subject.

"University Museums aims to fulfill the mission and duty of being part of a land grant institution by creating dynamic and scholarly exhibitions that advance the arts of Iowa and make these exhibitions easily accessible to a wide public," said assistant curator Adrienne Gennett.  "Artists in Iowa: The First Century will be a dynamic exhibition and publication that will greatly further the historical knowledge of the arts in Iowa."
