The American Alliance of Museums promotes museums as “a center where people gather to meet and converse and be an active, visible player in civic life, a safe haven, and a trusted incubator of change.” The ReACT Exhibition Series is intended to provide a safe and respectful environment in which to express and explore reactions, opinions, and perspectives of national current event issues relevant to the ISU community. The initiative is focused on offering engagement opportunities that foster social relevance and address provocative and challenging issues that arise on the ISU campus.
As befits an art museum, ReACT will primarily present content through exhibition and interpretation of visual arts. As a result of requesting audience engagement with the exhibitions, the exhibition content will evolve from day to day. Educational programming, in the form of lectures, open forums, and more may supplement exhibitions and further dialogue surrounding the issue addressed. ReACT will present 3-5 exhibitions each academic year. Some will explore a pre-determined topic; others may be curated as pop-up exhibitions responding to current events.
Any member of the ISU faculty and/or staff can propose an exhibition for the ReACT Exhibition Series. Questions can be addressed to Dana Schumacher, ReACT project coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Details on the proposal process, selection criteria, deadline, and application form is available HERE.
All exhibitions and associated programs are free and open to the public with a goal to connect members of our community with a wide variety of ideas and perspectives. ReACT exhibitions will invite viewers to use the art and information presented as a catalyst for reflection, discussion, and learning. Presentation of an exhibition does not constitute Iowa State University’s endorsement of the content or views expressed by the artists, artwork, participants, and visitors to ReACT exhibitions.
The ReACT Exhibition Series respects, values, and celebrates the unique attributes, characteristics, and perspectives that make each person who they are. We believe that our strength lies in our diversity among the broad range of people within the Iowa State University community. We consider diversity and inclusion a driver of institutional excellence and seek out diversity of participation, thought, and action. It is our aim that our exhibitions reflect and embrace the ISU Principles of Community.
